Chudnite
Mostove is one of the most interesting natural phenomena in the Rodopi
Mountain. It is located about 5 km to the northwest of the village of
Zabardo. The other name of the place is Erkupriya (from the Turk: er =
earth, kupru = bridge). These are two huge rock bridges that appeared
in the lands of the village of Zabardo as a result of an earthquake,
which destroyed an old cavern. This is the oldest cave entrance in
Bulgaria. Next to the second bridge one can see the entrance to the Ice
Cavern in which ice does not melt even in the middle of the summer.
Further is the entrance to the Big Cavern, which contains remains of
antic earthenware dating back from the 6 th or 5 th century B.C.
The
upper bridge is amazing by its stature. The vault is about 20 meters
thick and the precipice below it is 45 meters deep. The bridge is 45
meters wide. An old path from the village of Orehovo to Zabardo passes
over this bridge. The second bridge, which is about 200 meters away
from the first one, looks rather like a 60 meters long tunnel. Next to
the second bridge is the entrance to the Ice Cavern where ice does not
melt even in the middle of the summer. There is a dirt road from
Zabardo to the Chudnite Mostove. Nearby this natural phenomenon there
are two mountain hostels called respectively “Chudnite Mostove” and
“Skalnite Mostove”. |
